Established originally as the Presidents’ Council in April 1995, the United States-Egypt Business Council was restructured after meetings between President Hosni Mubarak and President George W. Bush in 2001, and again in September of 2005. In February of 2006, the Co-Chairman of the Egyptian Side of the Council, Mr. Mohamed Mansour, has been appointed by President Mubarak as the Egyptian Minister of Transport. In March of 2006, Mr. Galal El Zorba (previously the Co-Chairman of the Egypt-US Business Council for the term period of 2001-2005), was re-appointed for another term as the new Egyptian Side Co-Chairman. The Council currently consists of fifteen business leaders from Egypt and fifteen business leaders from the US, and serves under the auspices of the US Department of Commerce and the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Trade. It is commissioned to inform and advise both governments of private sector views, needs, and concerns regarding private sector business development in both countries, along with measures to enhance bilateral commercial ties that could lay the basis for a free trade framework between the US and Egypt.
